Western Downs Process Improvement Workshop Brings Together Regional Manufacturers
James McIntosh presenting at the Process Improvement Workshop
As part of the ‘Western Downs Manufacturing – Shaping the Energy Future project’, QMI recently delivered a focused 1-day workshop aimed at enhancing manufacturing processes through the principles of Lean Manufacturing, Eco-efficiency, and Energy Efficiency.
The workshop fostered cross-functional collaboration and generated many actionable strategies to support continuous improvement and sustainability goals. Participants gained practical tools to streamline processes, enhance energy productivity, and improve their competitiveness for major projects across the Western Downs.
First of the industry speakers to present was James McIntosh – Mcintosh Specialised Consulting. James focused on ‘Driving efficiency through practical LEAN solutions’, sharing insights into push-pull systems, identifying bottle necks, and measuring performance through a clearer operational lens.
Penny Prasad – Director of Ecoefficiency Group led the next session ‘From benchmarking to action: Managing climate risk in manufacturing’. She unpacked climate risks and the importance of accounting for environmental factors in manufacturing operations.
Brad Parsons – Founder & CEO, Rely Ability & Co-developer, LEAP program then took the stage sharing ‘Practical energy insights manufacturers can act on today’. Brad showcased a new Lean Energy and Productivity (LEAP) service — demonstrating live Energy Savers Assessments and highlighted how businesses can cut energy costs and boost sustainability.
Helen Bates from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development (DNRMMRRD) provided an update on behalf of the Queensland Manufacturing Hub, including upcoming events open to local manufacturers. This workshop was delivered with valued support from the Toowoomba Manufacturing Hub, whose ongoing collaboration continues to strengthen regional capability and industry growth across Queensland.
The final highlight of the workshop was the announcement of the Catalyst Manufacturing Benchmarking Pilot Program. In conjunction with DNRMMRRD, QMI will deliver this program designed specifically to support manufacturers understand their business performance, identify opportunities for growth and enhance competitiveness in today’s global market. Expressions of interest are now open.
Workshops such as these, are designed to empower regional manufacturers to innovate, collaborate, and grow — building stronger, more sustainable supply chains for Queensland’s future.
The program was funded through the Regional Economic Futures Fund (REFF). The REFF aims to support long-term community prosperity by facilitating sustainable employment and increasing investment in economic development and diversification projects.
